Delaware St.John Volume 1
Delaware St. John: Volume 1: The Curse of Midnight Manor Windows Front Cover  Delaware St. John: Volume 1: The Curse of Midnight Manor Windows Back Cover

The Curse of Midnight Manor is the first game in the Delaware St. John series. The player takes on the role of Delaware St. John, who is haunted by visions and nightmares. He meets Kelly Bradford, who owns a book store but researches paranormal phenomena in her spare time. They discover the visions refer to Morrisville Manor, also known as Midnight Manor, built in 1892 by the wealthy businessman Bernard Armand before a series of tragedies caused rumors of a curse and caused the manor to close down for good.

As in all Delaware St. John games, the game has been split up into two stories, here The Fate of Vandals and Done with Mirrors. The entire game takes place in the manor, but John will research different tragedies which occurred at different points of time. The first story deals with the recent disappearance of 5 teenagers in the manor, while the second story goes all the way back to some of the manor's original inhabitants. Most of the events are told through the ghosts who act out what happened to them. After completing the first story, the second one becomes available. This game also introduces the legend of The Destroyer and The Protector, further explored in the second and third game in the series.

The game is shown from a first-person perspective, with pre-rendered 3D cut-scenes in a third-person view. There are no dialogue trees during conversations and puzzles consists of inventory-based actions, exploration, gathering clues, a maze, some more difficult puzzles involving keypads and riddles, and a few time-based actions where John needs to act quickly so as not to die. During his search, John is in contact with Kate through VIC, the Voice/Imagery Communicator. Shown in the bottom right part of the interface, it can be used to ask for clues, or to send photos or recordings of paranormal activity for analysis. Many of the puzzles involve helping ghosts find peace by returning objects.

After the events in the first game, paranormal investigator Delaware St. John is pondering where his visions come from and if everything happens for a reason. While he is helping Kelly Bradford at her book store, a book falls to his feet and he is drawn to it. While browsing the atlas, lines appear on a map, forming the outlines of a town not on any map. Just like the previous game, Delaware St. John will explore while Kelly assists him through VIC, the Voice/Imagery Communicator. Shown in the bottom right part of the interface, it can be used to ask for clues, or to send photos or recordings of paranormal activity for analysis. Many of the puzzles involve helping ghosts find peace by returning objects. The game also introduces the character Simon Foss, who returns in the third game. Delaware does not meet any human characters in the game, only ghosts.

As in all games in the series, the story has been split up into two parts: The Big Story (in a movie theatre) and House of the Damned (in an orphanage). After completing the first story, the second one becomes available. The game is shown from a first-person perspective, with pre-rendered 3D cut-scenes in a third-person view. Puzzles consists of inventory-based actions, exploration, gathering clues, some more difficult puzzles involving codes, and a few time-based actions where John needs to act quickly so as not to die. Compared to the first game, the environment is now a bit larger with more areas to explore. Usually, there are no dialogue options while the story is told, but this game is the only one in the series to feature a few dialogue trees with different questions, but with no effect on the story.

The game usually has Delaware solve tragic events by talking to ghosts and helping them find peace. The events in the town are related to his own past, however, and the overall storyline about the legend of The Destroyer and The Protector is continued.

 Delaware St.John Volume 3
Delaware St. John: Volume 3: The Seacliff Tragedy Windows Front Cover  Delaware St. John: Volume 3: The Seacliff Tragedy Windows Back Cover

The Seacliff Tragedy is the third game in the Delaware St. John series. It covers a separate case for paranormal investigator Delaware St. John, but also continues the general storyline of the previous games. John has a vision of an amusement park accident where more than a hundred guests were killed. The park, Seacliff Amusement, has been locked down since. John decides to investigate, but contrary to the previous games, his friend Kelly Bradford can be controlled as well. They both take turns to explore a certain area of the park. The story has been split up into two main parts: Everyone Loves a Clown and The Protector.

Set entirely in the abandoned park, John and Kelly meet different characters, of which quite a few are ghosts, and they try to find out the cause of the tragic accident. Meanwhile, they continue the search for proof that John is The Protector, who, according to the legend, has to take on The Destroyer and his hunters. The game is shown from a first-person perspective, with pre-rendered 3D cut-scenes in a third-person view. There are no dialogue trees during conversations and although there are a few items and inventory-based puzzles, most of the game is spent exploring the park. During their search, John and Kelly are in contact with Simon through VIC, the Voice/Imagery Communicator. Shown in the bottom right part of the interface, it can be used to ask for clues, or to send photos or recordings of paranormal activity for analysis. A few of the puzzles are based on mazes, and number combinations with cryptic hints.

There are a few sequences where the characters can die, but those parts are then restarted right away. The game consists of pre-rendered still images and is entirely mouse-controlled. In most locations, the player can click forward, back, left, or right to turn or move to a new part, and the cursor automatically changes to the appropriate icon to examine, pick up or use an item. The player's performance is graded based on the amount of times a character lost consciousness. This happens when, at certain locations, Shadow People appear. These need to be clicked quickly with the flashlight to scare them away, but being too late does not effect the story or gameplay.

If a certain data can't be obtained peacefully they then resort to hacking the other corporation's net with cybernetically enhanced individuals (such as yourself) that can cruise the Networks in virtual vehicles called Traces. This then means that as a Netrunner you have to "race" in futuristic trenches and several other Tron-like settings while avoiding ICEs and other countermeasures and trying to achieve mission objectives like capturing a certain data file, clearing up a Net of intruders, etc.

Dementium II
Dementium II Nintendo DS Front Cover  Dementium II Nintendo DS Back Cover

Dementium II is the follow-up to the DS exclusive First-Person Shooter horror title Dementium: the Ward.

Story

Dementium II follows the story of the first game where players take control of brain-surgery recipient William Redmoor as he is tasked with fighting and attempting to overcome the nightmarish monsters he sees. Whereas the first game had William fighting his way out of his dark dreamworld as part of a therapy method known as "Phase 1." Dementium II opens with "Phase 1" considered a success, and now has William tasked with working through "Phase 2" of his treatment. This somewhat questionable therapy once again sees William fighting through a horrific nightmare world that switches from his prison-turned-hospital to a monster and demon-infested alternate vision.

Gameplay

Dementium II plays similar to the first game, and other Nintendo DS First-Person Shooters. Players move with the D-pad or, for southpaws, the ABXY buttons, and look around or target using the touch-screen. The only button used regularly is L (or R for southpaws) to attack or fire weapons. Accessing items in inventory, interacting with elements in the game environment, or jumping or crouching are all done with various buttons and options on the touch-screen. A large portion making up the center of the touch-screen doubles as a map.

Changes from Dementium: The Ward

The original Dementium game received generally favorable reviews, but also some harsh criticism on various points. The sequel fixes many issues such as featuring dual-wielding of flashlights and single-handed weapons, no respawning enemies when players move to new rooms, manual save points at various mirrors, the addition of a Survival Mode, and other general improvements (such as graphical changes) that often come with sequels.
