In Deadpool the player takes control of the loud-mouthed, foul-mouthed, merc-with-a-mouth Wade Wilson (a.k.a. Deadpool). While on out on a contract to kill a corrupt media mogul, Mister Sinister intervenes and kills him instead, drawing the ire of Deadpool who then vows revenge only to stumble upon a bigger plot which could spell the end of humanity. With the help of some of the X-Men such as Wolverine, Rogue and Domino along with a buddy from the future, Cable, they band together to stop Mister Sinister and his group of Marauders (Arclight, Blockbuster and Vertigo) from succeeding.

True to his character, Deadpool breaks the fourth wall numerous times during the game even with him starting out using "explosive persuasion" on executives at the developer High Moon Studios to put him into a game. As a result he refers to the script of the game, comments on certain achievements/trophies, references the player and even makes fun of the player if he does poorly during the game. It also references different franchises (such as Transformers and Spider-Man) and video games as well (The Legend of Zelda).

The main gameplay is a third-person slash fest mixed with guns as Deadpool starts out with his signature Katanas and duel pistols. As the game progresses, the player can upgrade Deadpool and buy new guns and melee weapons by using DP (Deadpool Points) which are scattered throughout the levels and dropped by enemies killed. To gain more DP, the player can chain together combos by successfully hitting and shooting enemies, the higher the combo, the higher the points. Momentum is also built up during these combos which activated can wipe out large groups of enemies or by picking up tacos that are dropped by enemies.

Deadpool can regenerate his health, similar to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and use teleport to get behind enemies as well as counter incoming attacks by them. While their is no multiplayer option, there is a challenge mode where players can go to arenas unlocked during the campaign and fight against wave after wave of enemies and compete for a place upon the leaderboard.

Dead Rising

You play as Frank West, a freelance photo-journalist, and you're on a hunt for the scoop of a lifetime. Following a lead to the town of Willamette, he finds that the town has been practically taken over by zombies. Trying to get away, Frank makes his way to the Willamette shopping mall hoping he can find help there.

Gameplay takes place in a set seventy-two-hour period where one hour of real time equals twelve hours in game. Frank can freely move about the entire mall, though some areas are not accessible in the beginning. Most of it is infested with zombies, but he has a safe base in a security room. Players can follow the main plot, where they must be in the right place at the right time and successfully complete missions in order to advance, or do side missions, wander around killing zombies and dressing up in clothes from the mall stores, or just stay on the roof and wait for the helicopter to come back to pick him up. The helicopter comes at the end of the three days and the game is over regardless of whether Frank is on the roof to get rescued.

Frank gains experience by taking pictures, rescuing survivors and killing zombies. As he gains experience, he levels up, which gives him new moves, a larger inventory and more health.

Pictures are scored based on the number of survivors or zombies, their proximity to the camera and on emotional content, like horror, humor or sexiness.

Survivors are located throughout the mall and Frank must show up at the right time to rescue them. If you show up too early, they may not be at their location yet and if you show up too late, they will be dead. Frank can lead survivors back tot he safety of the security room so they can be rescued. To do this, he can equip them with weapons and order them to follow him or wait at a specific location.

Rescuing survivors is complicated by the huge crowds of zombies roaming around the mall. There can be up to one thousand on screen at a time. Frank must avoid getting bitten and make sure the survivor continue to survive as he leads them. In addition to the zombies, Frank must face off against psychopaths, who are human who snapped when they saw the zombies and have become crazed killers.

Almost anything in the mall can be picked up and used. Food items restore health. Also everything else can be used as a weapon. Obvious, it's far more effective to kill zombies with a sub-machine gun or a chainsaw than by throwing CDs at them or hitting them with a mannequin, but you do have options and you may have to resort to killing zombies with a bowling ball or with you bare hands because all weapons have limited ammunition or durability and will eventually run out. You can pick up books from bookstores. These give you bonuses, like increased durability for a class of weapons, while in your inventory. There are also several vehicles you can use.

In keeping with the real-time theme, you are only allowed one save slot. Frank can save in bathrooms and in the security room, but this will overwrite and previous saves. If you make a mistake, you have to either restart the game, though you keep your current levels, or live with it and move on. This means your decisions do have consequences.

Once you complete the main plotline, you go into overtime mode, where Frank, rather than getting on the helicopter, gets another twenty-four hours to resolve the plot. If you beat overtime mode, you get infinite mode, where the helicopter isn't coming back, Frank loses health over time and all the survivors are trying to kill him. The object here is to stay alive as long as possible.

Dead Rising 2

Dead Rising 2 starts several years after the original Dead Rising finished: the experimental virus that turns living beings into the undead has spread beyond Willamette and infested most of the United States. When the crisis became serious, a synthetic drug called "Zombrex" which delays the zombification was released by the pharmaceutical company Phenotrans and sold out quickly.

The player takes control over Chuck Greene, a former national motocross champion fleeing to Fortune City, rebuilt from the remains of old Las Vegas and yet untouched by the zombie disease, along with his daughter Katey. Katey was bitten by her zombified mother and thus needs a shot of Zombrex every 24 hours to avoid zombification. In order to get his hands on more Zombrex - or at least the money to buy some - Chuck is desperate enough to enter a game show called "Terror Is Reality" where he has to slay the undead for entertainment. Right after the show some of his "victims" break loose into the city, causing a wide-scale infection. Chuck learns from a news report that he is accused of causing the outbreak and that the military will come to capture him and to purge the city in three days.

Like the first Dead Rising, the bulk of the game takes place over 72 hours, but once the player has completed all of the 'cases' (small sections of story that comprise the games objectives), Overtime Mode will be unlocked and adds extra time and objectives. During the initial 72 hours, Chuck must get Katey more Zombrex, find a way to escape Fortune City and clear his name of wrong doing whilst making sure him and Katey survive.

Gameplay takes place in a sandbox-like environment. The player can freely move around in zombie-infested Fortune City and choose how they want the game to progress by either taking on missions (plot-related and side missions, the latter mostly include saving survivors from zombies) or ignoring them. The player can ignore the main story altogether, letting all survivors die, and just fight the undead roaming the streets or go exploring. This will not result in a "game over" screen, but in a different ending. If the player fails to get Katey a shot of Zombrex every 24 hours, the game won't end either (unlike Dead Rising 2: Case 0). If the Story Mode is cleared with the true ending (which requires to complete all plot-related missions, the so-called "case files"), Overtime Mode will be unlocked, extending the main plot.

Zombrex can be found on various occasions around the city or bought off traders looking to make a fortune off the zombie outbreak. For rescuing survivors, defeating psychopaths (survivors hostile to Chuck) and chopping zombies, Chuck earns experience points (called "Prestige Points" like in the first game) used to level up and gaining more strength, a larger inventory or new abilities (like faster movement or additional combat techniques) in the process.

The first game was especially known for its extravagant ways of killing zombies. Most of the environment could be used to defend oneself, from regular pistols and shotguns to all kinds of gardening equipment, food (throwing soda cans on zombies) or plastic light sabers that glow in the dark from a kid's toy store - nothing seemed too funky for the developers at Capcom. The new developer of Dead Rising 2, Blue Castle Games, held onto that tradition and introduced a new combat element: the work bench. Chuck is now able to build his own custom weapons by using stuff he finds in places throughout the city. The player may just mess around to find out how to build a certain custom weapon or collect special blueprints to construct them, so-called combo cards. These can be unlocked by leveling up, doing side missions or progressing in the main plot. Custom weapons inflict much more damage then regular ones and Chuck gains more experience out of every killed enemy.

If Xbox 360 owners have a save file from Dead Rising 2: Case 0, they can import the level, abilities and unlocked combo cards into the Xbox 360 version of Dead Rising 2.

Dead Rising 3 takes place ten years after the event of the Dead Rising 2, in the city of Los Perdidos, California and players take on the role of a new protagonist, Nick Ramos. As a result of zombie infection, most of humanity has been wiped out, and anyone who takes the anti-zombification medication Zombrex has a GPS chip implanted into them along with the medication. Whilst Nick is in Los Perididos looking for supplies, a group of zombies escape, causing anouther outbreak. The game starts 3 days after the initial outbreak, and must attempt to escape, during which Nick must fight off zombies, as well as encounter other survivors of the outbreak. As with previous Dead Rising games, it is possible to finish the game on one of several different endings and an Overtime Mode.

There is also a two player drop in, drop out co-op mode that can be played over Xbox Live that allows other players to join a game, regardless of either players story progression.

Dead Rising 4

Dead Rising 4 is the fourth main game in the open world survival horror series and the eighth installment overall. It is set during September 2021, one year after the events of Dead Rising 3 and sixteen years after the original Dead Rising. The protagonist is Frank West, formerly a freelance photographer and now a professor at a community college, returning as the lead from some of the earlier titles. The prologue is a nightmare in the Willamette Park View mall in Colorado from his earlier days during the zombie outbreak. When he wakes up he receives a message from his his rebellious protege Vick Chu who drives him to Willamette. West thinks they go there to play minigolf, but Chu actually wants to look into a secret military base with him where human trials are supposed to take place. After sneaking into the base which serves as a tutorial, soon the scenes from his nightmare become reality again, set in winter during the Christmas period.

As before the game focuses on brawls against large groups of zombies, using combinations of melee and ranged attacks along with thrown weapons to mow down zombies in spectacular ways with over-the-top and slapstick violence. The game again uses an extensive crafting system where players can create and customize their own weapons along with building many types of vehicles. Weapons include for instance the Gandelf, combining a spear and a garden elf to shoot exploding elves and a slam attack. West gets to explore Willamette which has changed a lot since his last visit. The mall from the original Dead Rising has been turned into the central Willamette Memorial Megaplex. At the same time he also gets to explore the surrounding neighbourhoods. As usual there are a lot of items to discover and collect such as weapon blueprints and hidden graffiti art to photograph. There are also many side quests, hidden bosses known as Maniacs and additional investigations to pursue along with events to rescue survivors or destroy military equipment. There is more time to explore as the game no longer employs a countdown timer to urge the character forward. Shelters serve as safe havens to acquire new vehicles, weapons and maps that reveal collectibles in the environment. Experience provides skill points used to upgrade abilities.

Photography plays a role now, as West can use a camera during investigations with different filters for night vision, to detect clues or to take selfies, similar to the Batman: Arkham games. Another new element is the introduction of an Exo Suit. It briefly makes West extremely powerful, allowing him to tear through the environment and the groups of enemies. Some opponents can use it too. Enemies no longer get powerful at night during the day-night cycle, but there are new enemy types such as the soldiers from the Obscuris organization and the suicidal "freshies", humans that have only just turned into zombies. The game's save system is now more traditional based on checkpoints, rather than a limited amount of saves.

The game still supports cooperative multiplayer, but now no longer for the main campaign. Instead there are now four separate episodes where a team of up to four online players works together to complete missions in the mall.
